Philippe Starck

Aimee Marcos

French designer noted for his diverse variety of designs, which include everything from interior design to household items to boats to watches, was born on January 18, 1949, in Paris. He was also a practicing architect. Starck attended the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris, and it’s possible that his father, an aircraft engineer, had an influence on him. In 1968, he founded his first business, which made inflatable items. He developed a reputation in the 1970s by designing interiors for clients including the Paris nightclubs La Main Bleue (1976) and Les Bains-Douches. He was always interested in design as a whole idea (1978).

He developed a reputation in the 1970s by designing interiors for clients including the Paris nightclubs La Main Bleue (1976) and Les Bains-Douches. He was always interested in design as a whole idea (1978). Instead, he catered to each client’s needs, whether they were the rather traditional nature of state apartments or the more flamboyant tone required for a hip nightclub. However, some recurring themes did emerge in Starck’s work, such as a fondness for flowing, organic shapes and the incorporation of subtly humorous touches. In the Delano Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida’s South Beach neighborhood, for instance, each room had a metal apple holder attached to the wall with the words “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” promising a daily supply of apples. Here are a few of his creations:

Philippe Starck created the Fenc-e Nature line of patio chairs for Cassina. Fenc-e Nature, described by Starck as a “lifestyle collection of laid-back elegance,” consists of an armchair, a two-seater and three-seater sofa, as well as a coffee table with two different height options.

Through this collection, which was greatly influenced by and extremely appreciative of its environment, Starck celebrates harmony and osmosis with nature. A strong and classic collection is made possible by the careful selection of the highest quality and most natural materials. The organic, almost primordial forms and tactile features that define the Fenc-e Nature seating set.

This outdoor collection, called Magic Hole, features two armchairs of varying heights, a sofa, and a unique, colored “pocket” hidden behind the armrests. Rotational moulding is the star of the show here.

With straight surfaces that finish in gently contoured curves and slim sectional legs, the three pieces have a tidy shape. The Magic Hole garden series is ideal for use outdoors because it is cozy, light, resilient to shock, and weatherproof.
