However, under the free-spirited and avant-garde vision of Claire Choisne, creative director at Boucheron, the new offering from the Carte Blanche collection turns its gaze inwards.
The result is Human Being, a bold and moving tribute to the most precious and fragile thing that exists: humanity.
Thus, through a narrative structured around five creative universes – Rain, Flower, Light, Tattoo and Checkers – Boucheron explores the dualities that define human beings: what unites us as a species and the unique nuances that make us one-of-a-kind.
In this way, far from opting for conventional forms, the five creations share the same organic silhouette that embraces the body.
Each, however, evokes radically different sensations and optical illusions through masterful craftsmanship, celebrating essence over appearance.
The sensory journey on which Boucheron invites us through its High Jewellery collection begins with Rain, a breathtaking optical illusion in which raindrops appear to glide across and freeze upon the wearer’s skin.
To achieve this effect, the maison’s artisans crafted hollow drops carved from rock crystal, delicately filling them with successive layers of vegetable resin and embedding within them more than 4,800 diamonds, each set by hand individually.
The purest form of subtlety is found in Flower, a collection in which the skin is transformed into a botanical canvas reminiscent of classic wallpaper.
For this collection, Boucheron has drawn upon the ancient art of microminiature painting.
To achieve this, a specialist was commissioned to hand-paint, under a magnifying glass and stone by stone, delicate roses onto rose quartz.
In Light, the light does not bounce off the exterior, but appears to emanate from the very heart of the gemstone.
After selecting more than 1,500 carats of morganite with perfectly identical colour intensity, the goldsmiths created an invisible setting that prevents any pressure being exerted on the gemstone.
The craftsmanship of the piece lies in the fact that the diamonds were set directly inside the morganites themselves, which had been hollowed out beforehand – a true milestone in jewellery engineering, requiring almost 4,000 hours of absolute precision.
The celebration of self-expression continues with Tattoo, which evokes Victorian-era tattoos carved directly onto the reverse side of smoky quartz stones.
Using the ancient art of glyptics, Boucheron has sculpted bas-reliefs without the use of colour, relying solely on variations in depth to create light and shadow.
Finally, the collection embraces textile sophistication in Checkers, a dazzling houndstooth pattern engraved onto 163 onyx stones.
Pushing the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship, the maison has turned to femtosecond laser technology – capable of emitting ultra-fast pulses – to shape the material without compromising the structural integrity of the onyx, allowing the stone to flow over the lathe as if it were woven silk.
With Carte Blanche: Human Being, Boucheron has undoubtedly created one of the most poetic and innovative collections of recent years.
