Rodin 100 years, tours worldwide

Major museums celebrate the centennial of Rodin’s with traveling exhibitions.

Rodin 100” brings new information on his enormous impact on Modern Art history. Paris Rodin Museum reopened after 18 million $ renovation.

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was a radical artist who challenged sculpture rules. His major legacy was the idea that a fragment (an incomplete figure or a single hand) can be a work of art. Although not officially labeled in any art movement, he certainly breathes deep influences from Impressionism.

His realistic marble nudes were compared to Michelangelo’s. He worked closely with his young lover, Camille Claudel. Unfortunately, she is remembered as mistress rather than a talented artist. Her works are sublime in her own right.

Rodin is considered the father of Modern Sculpture but the truth is, he didn’t revel against the past. His focus on human nudes, using the classical bronze, marble, plaster, clay… show his respect for tradition, his desire to work within the system. In his own words:

“I invent nothing, I rediscover”.

His fame reached peak at 1900 Paris World Fair. He enjoyed stellar reputation among critics and wealthy collectors who lined up for his iconic works: “The Kiss”, “The Thinker”,“Age of Bronze”…

British Museum’s, “Rodin and Ancient Greece”, highlight his fascination with Archeology, transforming limbless, headless torsos into a new art genre. He wrote:

“The artist must be ready to be consumed by the fire of his own creation”.

His magic was bringing marble alive, almost breathing as real flesh.
