Word and Light
“And God said, ‘Let there be light!’ And there was light.”
A few days ago, we experienced a massive blackout across several countries, which left us stunned and stupefied.
Many, more than being without light and electricity, were worried about being without Wi-Fi—in other words, disconnected.
We have become so addicted to our internet gadgets that we can’t bear the thought of having to live without them.
However, we have reached a point where we have fewer and fewer human relationships, less eye contact and it’s almost a rarity to enjoy the sacred art of conversation.
Word and light are the origin of the world, according to Genesis:
“In the beginning was the word and the word was with God, and the word was God. In it was life, and the life was the light of humankind.”
Culture is, without a doubt, a light amid the growing darkness of masses drunk with ignorance and superficiality.
Light is an essential factor in most artistic creations.
Orphism is a term that can refer to two concepts: the ancient Greek mystery religion associated with the poet and musician Orpheus.
It is also an artistic movement, a pictorial style characterised by the use of colour.
Considered key in the transition from Cubism to Abstract Art, it was pioneered in Paris by the couple Robert and Sonia Delaunay and the Czech Frantisek Kupka.
Another light of genius shines through various awards that select top professionals in different areas of cultural creation.
We have researched three: Prix Versailles, Architectural Photography Awards, and Design and Lighting Awards.
The Prix Versailles honours the most beautiful museums in the world, specifically in Japan, China, Oman, Egypt, Netherlands and Warsaw.
Ironically, the Lighting Awards are perfect for these times… Let’s hope that if we get to experience more blackouts, we’ll focus on seeking the inner light, the one that should never go out.
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
